Explore Nursing in Alabama

The nursing deficit in the United States is an undeniable reality affecting the country as demands in healthcare increase and the aging nursing workforce reaches retirement. Alabama is no acceptation to this deficit, as the state currently shows a 5% deficit in the number of nurses needed in hospitals. As of April 2013, the Alabama Department of Labor disclosed that over two thousand jobs were open for registered nurses across the state. It is predicted that 15%-25% of the current nurses in Alabama will retire by 2015, increasing the projected deficit. Nurses with a bachelor’s degree or higher, as well as specialty and advanced practice nurses are in high demand. The majority of job openings for Alabamian nurses are in hospitals, followed by nursing homes and care centers. Some of the top employers of the state’s nurses are Brookwood Medical Center, Huntsville Hospital, and Regional Medical Center, just to name a few.

About Alabama

Alabama, also known as the “Heart of Dixie”, is known for its southern hospitality, humid subtropical climate, and rich Civil War history. The State’s capital, Montgomery, sits along the Alabama River and is the home to the Maxwell Air force Base as well as several universities, including Alabama State University and Faulkner University. The largest city in the state is Birmingham, which was founded during the post-Civil War Reconstruction era. Approximately one-fourth of Alabama’s citizens reside in Birmingham. Residents and tourists seldom lack inspiration for activities, as Alabama is home to a multitude of museums, national forests and parks, beaches and a few of the world’s largest stadiums, including the Talladega Speedway and Legion Field. The cost of living in Alabama is relatively low compared to coastal states and the general tax rate is four percent, with income tax at one of the lowest thresholds in the nation.
