About Delaware

“The First State”, as Delaware was appropriately nicknamed, was the very first colony to be admitted into statehood after the Declaration of Independence in 1787. The geography of Delaware is very level, as the state has the lowest mean elevation in the nation. However, the shoreline and beaches spruce the otherwise plain (levelly speaking) state and draw in tourism yearly, as do cultural events such as festivals and sporting events like the Diamond State Games. Delaware is home to several renowned national parks, wildlife refuges, lighthouses, museums and monuments. The capital of Delaware is Dover, which is the second largest city in the state next to Wilmington.
