Jobs for nurses in Indiana are growing each year as the need increases. By 2020, nearly 78,000 jobs will be available to nurses, although only 76% of those jobs are expected to be filled. There is a staggering demand for nurses with bachelor’s degrees or higher and advanced practice nurses, such as clinical nurse specialists, anesthetists, and midwives. The greatest need for nurses are in Indiana nursing homes, hospitals, emergency rooms, physician’s offices and clinics. In order to attract and retain qualified nurses, various hospitals in Indiana offer sign-on bonuses, accommodating work schedules for nurses with families, as well as subsidized training. In effort to decrease the amount of overtime required for nurses, some hospitals in Indiana allow their staff to bid online for open shifts at premium wages. Indiana, recognized as “The Crossroads of America”, is home to the Indianapolis 500, Wyandotte Cave, and the Indianapolis Colts NFL team. The state’s capital, Indianapolis, is the 12th largest city in the United States and is recognized as one of the fastest growing metropolitan areas in the country.
