In recent years, the North Carolina Institute of Medicine was created to address the nursing deficit, as well as shadow the National Institute of Medicine’s initiative to build a nursing workforce made up of 80% baccalaureate educated nurses by 2020.  The need for registered nurses in the state is on the rise and is predicted to rise 26% by 2020. Nurse practitioners and nurse anesthetists are also in extremely high demand. North Carolina is also known as “The Tar Heel State” because of its significant exports in history being tar, turpentine, and pitch, derived from the massive pine forests across the state.
