North Dakota Nursing Schools

Explore Nursing in North Dakota

Before the nursing shortage swept the nation, North Dakota was the only state to require that registered nurses obtain a bachelor’s degree before beginning work in one of the state’s healthcare facilities. In response to the nursing deficit, North Dakota dropped the requirement, although most hospitals still heavily stress the importance of a bachelor’s degree and will favorably hire nurses with this degree or higher. The top employers of nurses in North Dakota include MeritCare Hospital, Saint Alexius Medical Center and Altru Hospital, just to name a few. By 2015, North Dakota is predicted to only fill 79% of the nursing jobs in the state. North Dakota is among the top three states with the highest concentration of nurse’s aides, yet their need for registered nurses and licensed practical nurses is skyrocketing. Particularly, nurses are needed in the rural areas of North Dakota over metropolitan areas.

About North Dakota

North Dakota is a historically resilient state, having overcome the Great Recession with its wealth in natural resources, including oil and Bakken formations. These resources still contribute to North Dakota’s economy by creating job opportunities and population growth. The capital of “The Roughrider State” is Bismarck and the largest city is Fargo. North Dakota is located on the Great Plains and has low elevation along the Drift Prairie and Missouri Plateau, with fertile soil that allows for an abundance of crops and wildlife. The Badlands in North Dakota are abundant in fossil fuels. Several waterways run throughout the state, including the Missouri River and Devil’s Lake.
