As the current Oklahoman nursing workforce ages, the population grows, and healthcare needs increase, Oklahoma is experiencing the pangs of the national nursing deficit. By 2015, Oklahoma is only expected to fill 91% of the nursing jobs available in the state. The need for bachelor’s and master’s degree prepared advanced practice nurses and nurse practitioners are at an all-time high, particularly in rural areas, due to the low doctor to resident ratio in those areas. A majority of nurses in Oklahoma work in hospitals while the remainder are employed by home health services, long-term care, and public health. Around half of the nurses in the state work in rural areas. Top employers of nurses in Oklahoma include Saint Francis Hospital, Oklahoma University Medical Center and Saint Anthony Hospital, to name a few.
