Explore Nursing in Oregon

By 2015, Oregon will lack 32% of the nurses required to fulfill healthcare needs across the state, despite being one of the highest paying states in the nation. Nurses in the Portland-area tend to earn even more than those in rural areas of Oregon. A majority of nurses work in hospitals, clinics and physicians’ offices, followed next by long-term care facilities and home healthcare services. The top employers in Oregon are Oregon Health & Science University Hospital, Salem Hospital and Providence Portland Medical Center, to name a few. The need for nurses with a bachelor’s or master’s degree continues to increase. Although there is a serious need for registered nurses, there is an equally severe need for nurse practitioners, as over 46% of the current nurse practitioners are over age 55 and will be retiring within the next several years.
