About South Dakota
South Dakota was appropriately nicknamed “The Mount Rushmore State” as it is home to the monument honoring George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Theodore Roosevelt, and Abraham Lincoln that is carved into a granite rock face standing over 5,725 feet above sea level. The Sioux American Indian tribe once roamed what is now present-day North and South Dakota, utilizing the states’ geographic highlights and fertile soil to grow crops. The small, pine tree laden mountain range known as The Black Hills was considered sacred to the Sioux. Other landmarks across the state include The Badlands, Wind Cave, Crazy Horse Memorial, Custer State Park, and Deadwood. The capital of South Dakota is Pierre, and the largest city is Sioux Falls.
